The use of obstacle induced preferential dispersion (OIPD) for separation, concentration, or stratification of particles provides distinct advantages over conventional methods. Unlike methods such as centrifugation that rely on density variations between particles, the Gencline method can operate independently of the particle density. In contrast to filtration based methods, the method does not rely on particle size for exclusion. Instead this new process utilizes the interaction of the particulate with an obstacle field through which the solution flows. The fundamentally different mechanism by which the separation is accomplished yields inherent advantages for the Gencline process.Specific advantages of OIPD based processes include:
- No cake formation or removal required
- No trapping of particulate
- Non-clogging process
- Independent of particle density
- Continuous flow operation
- No flocculation agents required
- No gas addition required
- No irreversible cell or particle interactions
- Separation by various particle properties
- Size
- Surface properties
- Charge
- Obstacle interaction properties
- Scalable
- Potential low cost
